If you’re a local, you may have noticed the not-so new art trend sweeping across the Holy City: outdoor murals. For the last few years, they’ve been colorfully popping up on everything from the walls of sushi restaurants to 4-story apartment building facades in Park Circle.
Now Airbnb owners have hopped on the bandwagon. In March, Dana Penza, owner of one of Charleston’s most sought-after Airbnb’s, Boho Rosa, commissioned the two-women team behind Girls Who Paint Murals to paint two new outdoor murals in the backyard of the already iconic property.
Built in 1910, this historical home rental has been featured in Conde Nast Traveler as one of the Best Airbnbs in Charleston in 2024 and 2025, the buzz largely all about the home’s signature pink facade, classic double piazzas, and an historic-yet-modern interior that features exposed brick and wooden beams.
But it’s the backyard that has truly become the heart of the guest experience, Penza explains, who bought the property in early 2025. “The outdoor courtyards is where I’ve really put my stamp,” he says. “The previous owner did a beautiful job with the interior renovation, and since taking over, my focus has been on transforming the outdoor spaces.”
Today, Boho Rosa boasts two private pools with custom waterfalls and jacuzzi jets, a Moroccan-arched Sapele wood gate, a new pergola with Edison string lights and rattan pendants, and now — you guessed it — hand-painted outdoor murals unlike any other rental in town.
We chatted with Penza to learn more about the inspiration behind Boho Rosa’s outdoor Airbnb oasis, plus a sneak peek at a second mural coming soon that’s already in the works.

HHC: What is the vibe you’re going for in the backyard of Boho Rosa?
DP: “Lowcountry Bohemian Oasis.” The front of the house honors classic Charleston history. The backyard is meant to feel like a hidden, lush escape behind that historic facade. Warm moody walls, natural wood tones, tropical plantings, and vibrant murals create an intimate, resort-like atmosphere that’s both artistic and relaxing. You walk through a 200-year-old Charleston home and step into what feels like a private boutique hotel courtyard. That contrast is the whole point.
HHC: What was the vision for adding the first outdoor mural?
DP: I wanted to bring the energy of the Lowcountry directly into the courtyard. I worked with Alli, Christine, and the team at Girls Who Paint to create a bold, vibrant piece — a peacock, a leopard, a white egret, tropical palms, and a massive magnolia bloom, all set against a sunset sky. The goal was to reimagine a blank wall into an immersive focal point that elevated the entire outdoor space. I wanted guests to feel surrounded by color and life, even in the middle of downtown Charleston. And selfishly, I wanted a backdrop they couldn’t resist photographing and sharing — right next to the pool and custom waterfalls.
HHC: You mentioned a second mural on the way in June. What can visitors expect?
DP: The second mural is going to be a showstopper. It spans over 22 feet and features a sweeping Lowcountry scene anchored by a massive Live Oak tree draped in Spanish moss — roseate spoonbills, a barred owl, a painted bunting, and golden fireflies scattered throughout a warm sunset sky. It’s designed as the backdrop to our new pergola lounge area. Picture yourself swinging in an egg chair by the pool, string lights glowing overhead, with this incredible mural surrounding you. That’s the summer experience we’re building.
